Maryland became the 7th of the 50 United States on April 28, 1788. The United States Naval Academy was founded at Annapolis on October 10, 1845. Annapolis was once known as the "Athens of America" during the seventeenth century and formerly served as the capital of the United States. The first school in the United States was King Williams School which opened in 1696.
